Eurosong 2023
VRT reveals ‘Eurosong 2023’ contestants
Flemish broadcaster VRT has revealed the names of the seven participants in Eurosong 2023, the Belgian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest which is returning after a seven year hiatus.
VRT will announce more details about the national final in December. For now, it has been confirmed that the seven contestants will take part with two songs each. There will be a final on Saturday 14 January in Palais 12, a major concert hall in Brussels. A combination of televoting and jury voting decide who will represent Belgium in Liverpool in May.
The seven contestants are:
1. Ameerah
Astrid Roelants or Ameerah previously took part in Eurosong 2004, coming last in the final with Don’t Stop the Music.
In 2010, she scored a hit with Madcon, the Norwegian music duo also responsible for the interval act during the Eurovision final in Oslo.
2. Chérine
Chérine previously took part in The Voice in Flanders (2017, where she ended up in the team of Hooverphonic singer Alex Callier) as well as in France (2019, 2022). This year she was also a finalist in a talent competition of VRT’s youth radio station.
3. gala dragot
Gala is mostly known for winning the Flemish version of The Voice Kids in 2020.
4. Gustaph
Gustaph, or Stef Caers, was a backing singer for Sennek and Hooverphonic at Eurovision 2018 and 2021, respectively. In 2000 he had a minor hit, then singing as Steffen.
5. Hunter Falls
Like Chérine, Hunter Falls, or Tchiah Ommar Abdulrahman, previously took part in the Flemish The Voice as well as the youth radio station’s talent competition, without winning either.
6. Loredana (picture)
As part of 2 Fabiola, Loredana took part in Eurosong 2014. Even though their song was eliminated in the semifinals, they scored a big hit with She’s After My Piano.
Next to continuing as a singer for 2 Fabiola, Loredana has worked on her solo career as well, including a second place in the most recent Flemish version of The Masked Singer as Ridder (Knight).
7. The Starlings
The least surprising yet the most famous name of them all. The Starlings is a music duo of husband-and-wife team Tom Dice, known for his Eurovision entry Me and My Guitar in 2010 and Kato Callebout, who like Tom became known after ending second in a talent show. Her biggest solo hit was The Joker, in 2011.
Their joint breakthrough came two years ago during a popular Flemish music show where singers perform alternative versions of each others’ songs. The Starlings first full album peaked at #2 in the Flemish album charts, and their biggest hit to this date is Little Submarine.
